Medan (ANTARA) - The administration of North Sumatra’s Medan city has expressed strong support for the establishment of a city-level National Narcotics Agency (BNN) office to strengthen efforts to prevent and combat drug abuse and trafficking.

Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Waas conveyed this support while attending the “Proposal Seminar on the Establishment of the Medan City National Narcotics Agency (BNN)” in Medan on Thursday.

The seminar was organized in support of the Regional Action Plan (RAD) for the Prevention, Eradication, Abuse, and Illicit Trafficking of Narcotics (P4GN) by the Medan Regional Research and Innovation Agency (Brida).

Waas emphasized that setting up a local BNN is crucial to enhancing the effectiveness of anti-drug measures.

“We fully support the formation of BNN Medan. Drug issues are urgent and must be tackled together. I don’t want our young generation to fall victim to drugs,” he said.

While acknowledging the role of BNN North Sumatra in overseeing Medan, Waas said he believes a city-level BNN would enable more targeted coordination and expand the agency’s reach down to the neighborhood level.

“It’s time for Medan to have its own BNN, just like other regions in North Sumatra. We will immediately coordinate with relevant stakeholders to prepare for its formation,” he added.

He further noted that the presence of BNN Medan would help reduce drug abuse and prevent crimes such as street robberies and gang violence, which are often triggered by narcotics.

Head of Brida Medan, Mansursyah, said that the seminar aimed to identify and analyze the current state of drug distribution and abuse in the city, as well as gather inputs and support from key stakeholders.

“We want to build a city-level BNN based on actual data and real needs, with support from all sectors,” he informed.

Waas urged all elements of society to unite in the fight against drugs. “With strong coordination and strategy, drug eradication will be more effective,” he said.
