Jakarta (ANTARA) - State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi stated that the claim about a plan to impose a tax on money gifts given in envelopes during wedding events is untrue and has not been implemented.
Hadi delivered the statement during a press conference at the Presidential Palace complex here on Friday, in response to widespread public discussion about the possibility of taxing cash envelopes at social events such as wedding celebrations.
“The Ministry of Finance, in this case the Directorate General of Taxes, has clarified the issue circulating in public. Regarding whether there will be a tax on cash gifts from wedding events, that does not exist, not yet,” Hadi stated.
Earlier, a report went viral on social media suggesting that cash envelopes given at wedding parties would be taxed by the government.
The issue was also raised by the House of Representatives' (DPR's) Commission VI member, Mufti Anam, during a recent meeting at the parliamentary complex in Senayan.
“The state is currently experiencing a revenue shortfall, and the Ministry of Finance must consider how to cover the deficit. We even heard rumors that in the near future, people receiving cash envelopes at weddings and other gatherings will be taxed by the government,” he remarked.
However, the Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) has denied the claim, stating that taxation regulations follow existing provisions and do not target non-commercial social activities.
Director of Counseling, Services, and Public Relations at the DJP, Rosmauli, stated that the confusion arose from a misunderstanding of general taxation principles.
“If the gift is personal, non-routine, and not related to employment or business activities, then it is not subject to tax and is not a priority for DJP supervision,” Rosmauli remarked on Thursday (July 24).
