Mataram (ANTARA) - The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) has provided technical guidance on search and rescue (SAR) operations to community groups, aiming to empower residents for rescue missions within Gunung Rinjani National Park, West Nusa Tenggara.
The Deputy for Human Resource and Volunteer Management at Basarnas, Moh Barokna Haulah, expressed appreciation in a written statement on Tuesday in Mataram for the strong sense of mutual cooperation and social awareness demonstrated by the people of Sembalun Sub-district in assisting with tourist rescues and participating in training activities.
"The role of the community is vital in search and rescue operations, especially in vulnerable areas such as Mount Rinjani, which is often a climbing destination with a high level of risk," he remarked.
"The community’s role is vital in search and rescue operations, especially in high-risk areas like Mount Rinjani, a popular climbing destination with a high level of risk," he noted.
He added that, as outlined in Law Number 29 of 2014 concerning Search and Relief, the success of SAR operations largely depends on cross-sectoral collaboration and active community involvement.
"Local community involvement is expected to accelerate the rescue of tourists involved in climbing accidents," he said.

Community empowerment activities also form part of Basarnas’ disaster mitigation strategy. In this context, Basarnas held a First Aid Workshop and Technical Guidance session focused on mountain and forest SAR operations.
"It is hoped that trained community members can provide effective initial responses in emergency situations," he remarked.
On this occasion, Basarnas also honored SAR volunteers who contributed to the successful rescue of a Brazilian climber from Mount Rinjani’s crater.
The success of the operation reflects the strong synergy between Basarnas, the local community, and other stakeholders.
"We hope this initiative doesn’t end here. We encourage local governments and communities to sustain and develop this effort independently, with continued support from the Mataram SAR Office and nearby SAR Posts," he concluded.
This initiative represents a strategic step in strengthening community preparedness and capabilities in handling emergencies, while enhancing cooperation between Basarnas, local authorities, and communities to uphold safety and humanity in the mountain region.
