Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Forestry has seized 16 protected eagles in an operation against illegal wildlife trade in Central Bangka District, Bangka Belitung Islands (Babel).
The bust, which targeted a 19-year-old man, is part of a firm commitment to combat activities that threaten Indonesia's biodiversity.
"The possession and trade of protected wildlife is an illegal activity that threatens the sustainability of our biodiversity, with the potential to disrupt the balance of the ecosystem," said Head of the Forestry Law Enforcement Agency for Sumatra Hari Novianto on Monday.
On September 10, a joint team from the South Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) investigated a public report.
The operation resulted in the seizure of 13 black-winged kites and three brahminy kites.
The suspect, identified by his initials MA, was apprehended in Pangkalan Baru Sub-district and is currently being detained at the Bangka Belitung Regional Police Detention Center.
He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to Rp5 billion (US$296,000).
Novianto highlighted the critical ecological role of these birds.
As apex predators, both kite species are vital for maintaining the balance of the food chain by controlling populations of small mammals, rodents, insects, and other aquatic animals.
Their presence is essential for a healthy and sustainable ecosystem. The seized birds are now being cared for at the Alobi Foundation Animal Rescue Center.
