West Lampung, Lampung (ANTARA) - A Sumatran tiger attacked a 45-year-old farmer, Amir, in South Bukit Barisan National Park, West Lampung, on Friday afternoon, officials said Saturday.

Amir, from Tiga Jaya Village, Sekicau Sub-district, was walking home with his son when the tiger struck from behind, said village head Subandi.

The tiger bit Amir's head and knocking both to the ground. His screams scared the animal off, and nearby residents rushed him to a health center, Subandi said.

“He suffered deep head and back wounds and needed nearly 20 stitches,” said Indra, a health worker. “He’s now in stable condition.”

Following the incident, the village head urged residents to avoid farming alone and remain alert.

The South Bukit Barisan National Park is a key habitat for critically endangered Sumatran tigers, increasingly pushed into contact with humans due to deforestation and encroachment.

Authorities have not located the tiger.

Lampung has seen multiple fatal tiger attacks in recent years, including two deaths in February 2024.

On February 8, police found the body of a 47-year-old man killed by a tiger in Suoh Subdistrict. Two weeks later, a 28-year-old man from Bumi Hantati Village was also fatally attacked.

Sumatran tigers, the smallest tiger subspecies, are found only on Sumatra and face extinction from habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.
