Jakarta (ANTARA) - Djamari Chaniago was officially sworn in Wednesday as Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs (Menko Polkam), replacing acting minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.

The ceremony took place at the State Palace, Gambir, Central Jakarta.

A seasoned military officer, Djamari served in the Indonesian Army for decades, holding key strategic posts. His last military role was Chief of the General Staff of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) from 2000 to 2004.

Born in Padang, West Sumatra, on April 8, 1949, Djamari graduated from the Military Academy (Akabri) in 1971 and joined the elite Kostrad infantry unit. He participated in major military operations, including the 1975 integration of East Timor (Operation Seroja), alongside future President Prabowo Subianto.

Djamari’s career advanced steadily with important commands such as Commander of Military Region III/Siliwangi (1997–1998) and Commander of Kostrad (1998–1999) before his appointment as Chief of the General Staff.

Beyond the military, he also engaged in politics as a member of the People’s Consultative Assembly representing West Java (1997–1998) and the Armed Forces faction (1998–1999).

Experts say Djamari’s extensive defense and political background suits him well for the Menko Polkam role, a central post coordinating ministries like Defense, Home Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Communications, Police, Military, and Attorney General’s Office to maintain national stability.

Khairul Fahmi, a security analyst at the Institute for Security and Strategic Studies, emphasized the need for a strong and publicly accepted Menko Polkam who can reassure the public and foster a conducive political climate within the government, parliament, and society.

With his experience and leadership, Djamari is seen as the ideal figure to oversee Indonesia’s political and security coordination.
