Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto recognized the workforce by inaugurating Confederation of All Indonesian Workers’ Unions (KSPSI) Chairman Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat into the Red and White Cabinet as environment minister, KSPSI President Andi Gani Nena Wea said.

“I already knew that there would be a labor figure entering the cabinet. We view this move as an honor for all labor movements across Indonesia,” Wea said in Jakarta on Monday.

He noted that Jumhur had pledged to remain committed to workers’ ideals while serving in government.

“Brother Jumhur has assured me that he will never stray from his idealism as a labor leader,” he added.

President Prabowo appointed Jumhur to lead the Environment Ministry, replacing Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, who was sworn in as deputy coordinating minister for food affairs at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday afternoon.

In his post-inauguration remarks, Jumhur expressed his commitment to continuing efforts to address Indonesia’s long-standing waste management challenges while aligning national practices with global standards.

“There are many things that need to be done. For example, in waste management, we will gradually comply with global standards. We are working on various international agreements,” he said at the palace.

He also expressed confidence that the president’s leadership and vision would enable the ministry to perform effectively and meet its targets.

Born in February 1968 in Bandung, West Java, Jumhur holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics from the Bandung Institute of Technology. He later pursued further studies at the National University and the University of Indonesia, where he studied sociology at the master’s level.

He has a strong track record as an activist advocating for workers’ rights, both within and outside government.

During the administration of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Jumhur served as head of the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Workers (BNP2TKI)—now known as the Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers—from 2007 to 2011.
