"We hope that the tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran can be resolved properly," Indonesian Cabinet Secretary Pramono Agung said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Cabinet Secretary Pramono Agung has said Indonesia, with its free and active politics, is committed to bringing peace to the Middle Eastern region.

"We hope that the tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran can be resolved properly," Pramono Agung said here on Wednesday.

According to him, Indonesia hopes the difference in maddhab (a school of thought within Islamic jurisprudence, which is called fiqh) will not exacerbate to become so big as to cause a conflict in the region.

Pramono said Indonesia, with the largest Muslim population in the world, will play an active role in maintaining peace, both at regional and global levels.

"Indonesia as a free country will play a proactive role in managing any conflict as such a progressive politics is enshrined in our constitution," he said.

Indonesia can play a role through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to help maintain peace in the region.

Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday (Jan 3) that it was severing ties with Iran after its embassy in Tehran was firebombed in protest against the Kingdoms execution of Shiite cleric, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

Nimr was a force behind 2011 anti-government protests in eastern Saudi Arabia, where Shiites have long complained of marginalization.(*)
