Although the quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami ..."Kupang (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale jolted the East Nusa Tenggara provincial capital of Kupang at 12.35 pm local time Saturday, an official said.
"Although the quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami, it was strong enough to prompt the local people to scramble out of their houses in panic," local Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) spokesperson Sti Nenotek remarked after the quake.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 10.29 degrees southern latitude and 123.65 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 16 kilometers, he said.
Earlier Friday, two moderate quakes, respectively measuring 2.2 and 3.1 on the Richter scale, jolted Kupang and Manggarai districts, but there was no immediate report of damage and casualty.
The Indonesian archipelago, lying in an area of intense seismic activity where several tectonic plates collide, suffers frequent earthquakes.
