Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The House of Representatives (DPR) has set a target of passing 30 to 37 bills into laws this year, DPR Speaker Ade Komaruddin said here Wednesday.

"We have set a target of producing 30 to 37 bills in 2016 by reducing recess time and working visits abroad," he said.

By cutting recess time and overseas working visits, the working days of legislators would increase to 180 days a year, which is more than the working days of parliament members in the United States (US) recorded at only 120 days a year, he said.

"The DPR secretary general has told us that the working days will be more than those for the US and Australian parliament members which are 120 and 69 days a year respectively," he said.

With the DPRs new commitment, he hoped the public would not regret paying the wages of legislators, Ade said.

The DPR Consultative Board had agreed in a meeting earlier to cut legislators visits abroad and to the regions as well as their recess time, he said.

"By cutting overseas visits, more than Rp139 billion would be saved," he said.

The budget for overseas working visits had been set at Rp360 billion a year, he said, and added that visits abroad would only be allowed for certain commissions and DPR bodies.

"Exception is made for Commission I which deals with foreign affairs and Commission VIII which overseas hajj pilgrimage and inter-parliamentary cooperation," he said.

The cut in visits would not only be aimed at efficiency but also at improving the performance of the legislators, which has so far been considered by the publics as being poor, Ade said.
