Langkat, N Sumatra (ANTARA News) - The Langkat Resort Police Office has confiscated 34 kilograms (kg) of marijuana, which was to be smuggled to Medan, North Sumatra, and has arrested four suspected traffickers.

Head of the Langkat Resort Police Office Adjunct Senior Commissioner Dwi Asmoro stated here on Monday that of the 34 kg of illicit leaves, 19 kg were confiscated from two suspects identified as PONI (52) and AN (29), both belonging to the same family.

The mother and her child were caught redhanded in possession of 19 kg of marijuana onboard a Putra Pelangi bus, bearing the license plate BL 7540 AA, heading to Medan during an inspection on Sunday (Jan. 31).

"We found 10 packets of marijuana inside a box, which is estimated to weigh 10 kg," Asmoro noted, adding that another package weighing 9 kg was found inside a luggage.

The two suspects are being investigated by the narcotics division of the local police and are liable to face more than five years of imprisonment.

One of the suspects revealed that they wanted to smuggle the illicit goods acquired from a person named Diana, a resident of Cunda Lhoksumawe, to Medan.

The two were promised a reward of Rp1 million (around US$74) if they succeed in delivering the packages to Medan.

The two, with the initials RIFI (24) and SYAM (39), are the residents of Babah Bulon Village, Sawang Sub-district of North Aceh District, and were arrested onboard Kurnia Bus bearing the license plate BL 7783 PB.(*)
