The case against Novel dates back to year 2004 when he was chief of police detective in Bengkulu.
"Mr Novel Baswedan is an important asset for KPK. For three days we sought talks here and there into dropping the case and at last we are thankful. Yesterday, the attorney general office asked for the return of the dossier as it needs to be made perfect," KPK chairman Agus Rahardjo said here on Wednesday.
Novel was to stand trial on February 16 at the Bengkulu district court on charge of cruel treatment of detainees charged with stealing wallet nests in Bengkulu in 2004 causing the death of one of the suspect.
"We appreciate the decision of the judiciary. We will continue coordination with other law enforcing agencies the police and the judiciary . Hopefully, ahead we could step in greater harmony," Agus said.
Deputy chairman of KPK Laode M Syarif also said KPK appreciates the attorney general office for withdrawing the indictment against Novel.
Laode said he did not know whether the dossier would finally be submitted again to court later after the attorney general and the Bengkulu public prosecutors finished studying it .
Police began to target Novel after he led KPK investigation into a corruption case involving high ranking police officers including Ins.Gen. Djoko Susilo who finally went to jail.
Novel case triggered long conflict between and police and KPK under previous leadership of Abraham Samad.(*)
