We invited @twitter to spread the message of tolerance and world peace-Jkw."
San Francisco (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has urged social media platforms, such as Twitter, to spread the message of tolerance and peace in the world in a bid to fight radical and extremist concepts.

"We invited @twitter to spread the message of tolerance and world peace-Jkw," President said in a tweet posted while he was at Twitters offices on Wednesday.

The President said he sees social media having many important values in the current digital era.

Jokowi hoped that Twitter can cooperate with Indonesian stake holders to distribute humanitarian messages, such as peace and tolerance, as well as concerns over any disaster.

"I welcomed the good role of Twitter as one of worlds media platform that spreads various positive values among people, including democracy and good governance values," Jokowi said.

Jokowi visited the United States and attended the ASEAN-U.S. Summit in California held on February 15 and 16.

He said social media platforms can be an option for defending people from extremist concepts.

He also added there were many invitations to join extremist groups through social media.

"Thus, we should cooperate with social media to spread the message of peace and tolerance as a counter-narrative effort," the President said to Twitter Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey.

Jokowi ended his U.S. trip on Wednesday by visiting Silicon Valley, the center of the United States creative economy in San Francisco.

While in Silicon Valley, the Indonesian president also visited Facebooks headquarters, Googleplex, and Plug and Play.
