"The extension of the Rembele airports facilities has been carried out from 2014 to 2015," the Transportation Ministrys head of Communication and Public Information bureau, JA Barata remarked through his written statement here Friday.
Prior to the extension of the airports facilities, only Fokker 50 or CN 235 aircraft could land at the Rembele airport, Barata further said.
The extension of the airport facilities covered among others things the runway from the previous size of 30 x 1,400 meters to 30 x 2,250 meters.
"After the development of such facilities, Rembele airport will be capable to accommodate Boeing 737-series aircraft," he stated.
The Rembele airport is located in Gampong Bale Atu village of the Bener Meriah District in the most western province of Aceh, at a height of about 1,400 meters above sea level.
The airport is believed to be the gateway in the Central Aceh highlands which is famous for its natural attractions and the famous Gayo coffee that is exported to Europe.(*)
