An internist and endocrinologist from the Dr Soetomo Hospital, Sony Wibisono said here on Monday that academics and medical practitioners have formed a stem cell research team under the Airlangga University.
"The stem cell research team was established in 2010, and involved 100 patients who expressed their willingness to participate in the research," he said.
He said these patients were involved in the research based on the recommendation of their doctors.
"Actually, many patients wanted to join this research project, but we could only accommodate a limited number," Sony, who works in the field of endocrine and metabolic bodies, said.
According to him, there are two types of diabetes, namely diabetes type 1 and type 2. The patients will be examined to understand which type of diabetes they are suffering from.
"The pancreas and insulin levels were mainly under observation after treatment, and fat tissue sample is taken every three weeks," he said.
Before making this observation, each patient must be evaluated by the doctors to determine the eligibility of patients to receive stem cells. After receiving a stem cell, the patients will be evaluated on the development of their pancreas and insulin.
"The reaction of each person is different, depending on his/her lifestyle. For example, after taking the medicine, one patient may probably not be able to control his/her appetite, but other patients can do so," he said.
He believes that people suffering from diabetes are likely to recover through stem cell therapy.
"One thing should be understood that the healing process using stem cells depends on the cells of each person," Sony said.(*)
