Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The health ministry said Indonesia is not among 46 countries in the world facing an outbreak of the deadly Zika virus.

"Indonesia is not a country facing an extraordinary situation because of Zika virus," Director General of Disease Prevention and Control Mohammad Subuh, said here on Tuesday.

Indonesia is not even among 14 countries facing transmission of Zica virus, Subuh added.

He said his statement is confirmed with data from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Zika transmission in the world.

In its release on June 15, 2016 WHO said 60 countries have reported continued transmission of mosquito vector.

There have been 46 countries reporting an outbreak of Zika virus since 2015.

Meanwhile 14 countries reported evidence of continued transmission of Zika virus between 2007 and 2014.

In the second week until June 15, there was no new country reporting transmission of Zika virus from mosquito vector or human sexual transmission.

Zika virus was first identified in monkey saliva in Uganda through yellow fever monitoring in 1947.

Virus Zika was known to have infected human beings in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania in 1952. (*)
