Indonesia strongly condemns the terrorist attacks ..."Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government has condemned Tuesdays suicide bomb attack on Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, that killed 28 people and wounded many more, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministrys press statement received here, Wednesday.
"Indonesia strongly condemns the terrorist attacks and expresses sympathy and profound condolences to the victims and their families, the government, and the Turkish people for the incident," according to the press statement.
Reuters reported that two suicide bombers on Tuesday opened fire before blowing themselves up at the entrance to the main international airport in Istanbul.
The police fired shots in an attempt to stop the attackers just before they reached a security checkpoint at the arrival hall of the Ataturk airport, but they blew themselves up.
Ataturk is Turkeys largest airport and a major transport hub for international travelers. Pictures posted on social media from the site showed wounded people lying on the ground within and outside one of the terminal buildings.
However, based on information from the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Istanbul, there was no report of any Indonesian victim of the bomb attack.
The Indonesian Consulate General in Istanbul has tasked its staffers with monitoring the developments at Ataturk airport and coordinating with local authorities to find whether there were any Indonesian victims.
With regard to the security situation in Turkey, the Indonesian government has once again appealed to all its citizens residing in Turkey to ensure personal safety, increase alertness, avoid crowded places that could become terror targets, and follow the directions of the local security authorities.
Currently, there are some 728 Indonesian citizens in Turkey, of which 310 are students, while the rest are workers in the country.
