Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla on Wednesday officially inaugurated the convention and international exhibition on geothermal at the Jakarta Convention Center.

"Our lives cannot be envisioned without electricity. It has become a fundamental basic need," Jusuf Kalla said here on Wednesday.

The vice president said Indonesia is endowed with fossil and renewable energy.

"If we talk fossil energy, Indonesia has coal and abundant amount of gas. As for renewable energy, Indonesia has geothermal, biomass and wind. But, our consumption level is the lowest in Asia," the vice president said.

To utilize the energy optimally, the vice president added, the government should formulate a good policy and a workable plan.

The 16th convention and international exhibition on geothermal will run for three days, from August 10 to 12, 2016.

The meeting was expected to discuss the development of geothermal energy and ways to reach the target of 7,000 megawatts by 2025.

Various activities were undertaken as part of a workshop on geothermal and organizers received 105 scientific papers.

A total of 400 participants enrolled in the event.

About 3,000 people were expected to visit the exhibition.(*)
