It will be held at the Multimedia Nusantara University, Serpong, Tangerang, from September 20 to 22, 2016.
Hundreds of media professionals from at least 62 countries will attend the event to discuss a number of issues and challenges facing the industry, Press Council member Ratna Komala said.
"This is the first time we are hosting an event where all stakeholders, journalists, observers, organizations and business enterprises from the media world will gather together to discuss the industry," added Ratna at a press conference at the Press Council Building here Thursday.
Indonesia was chosen as the host because the country had a long history of press freedom and embraced technological change, Ratna explained.
Indonesia is one of the largest democratic countries in the world and is a symbol of transition of press freedom, Ratna noted.
"This is a recognition for the press in Indonesia," Ratna said.
"For us at the Press Council, the forum is important for discussing ideas and producing a joint effort for the future of media."
The forum will issue a number of recommendations for media practitioners to survive amidst a tsunami of digital and social media.
Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), an international NGO that initiated the Jakarta World Forum for Media Development, said that many important issues need to be addressed relating to mass media.
GFMD Chief Leon Willems hopes the forum will become a vehicle for sharing experiences, exchanging ideas and discussing the results of the research done so far on the future of mass media.(*)
