He was welcomed upon arrival on Friday evening by Venezuelas Vice President Aristobundo Izturiz, flanked by Indonesian Ambassador to Venezuela Mohammad Luthfie.
Indonesia and the Non-Aligned Movement must adjust to the challenges of the 21st century with concrete contributions to world peace, Indonesian foreign minister Retno Marsudi said in a press statement earlier.
The 17th meeting that would take the theme of "Peace, Sovereignty and Solidarity for Development" will last until September 18.
The Non-Aligned Movement must be able to play strategic roles, be a global partner and contribute to world peace, Marsudi added.
All member countries must push for at least three steps that include strengthening the spirit of multilateralism where all countries have an equal vote, and contribute to efforts in dealing with global economic challenges through global partnership involving all parties, including cooperation between advanced and developing countries, she said.
Thirdly, it must immediately conduct internal improvement with regard to its working system so that it does not fall into the trap of merely being a talk shop organization.
The improvement is badly needed so that the organization can become one that has high credibility and is relevant and effective in dealing with global challenges, she explained.(*)
