Pamekasan, (ANTARA News) - District Head of Sumenep A Busyo Karim said he had no objection to plan to split the district into two with the islands part of the district becoming a separate district.

The purpose is to meet the requirement in number of districts for Madura becoming a province, separate from East Java.

"I was elected by the people. It would not be not ethical if reject the wish of the people," the district head said on the sidelines of a seminar on "Madura Becoming a Province" here on Saturday night.

The split of the district of Sumenep has become a discourse in a number of scientific discussions and studies in Madura lately.

The plan is to split the easternmost district in the island of Madura into Sumenep District and Islands district

The consequence is that the district of Sumenep will lose its rich oil island areas as a separate district.

"Yes, if we have to be separated , certainly we would no longer talk about oil and gas," Busro Karim.

The national seminar titled "Madura Becoming a Province" was held at the Ronggosukowati Auditorium of the Pamekasan district on Saturday and was opened by head of the the fourth territory coordination division Azhar representing the East Java governor Soekarwo.

"This seminar is to bring perceptions into one between each district in Madura," Azhar said. (*)
