"North Kalimantan is our youngest province which shares common borders with neighboring Malaysia. Despite being the youngest province, I believe North Kalimantan will be able to catch up with other provinces in Kalimantan Island in terms of trade and economy," the president said in a limited meeting held to evaluate the implementation of national strategic national projects and priority programs in North Kalimantan at the Presidential Office here on Tuesday.
The president noted that North Kalimantan has great potentials which must be used as optimally as possible for the local peoples welfare.
He noted that to develop North Kalimantan, there was a lot of homework to be done.
"The North Kalimantan economy grew 3.75 percent. Of course, the growth was influenced by a fluctuation of commodity prices, particularly mining commodity prices, in the global market," he stated.
He remarked that the mining sector contributed to 24.65 percent of the local economy, followed by the agricultural sector with 18.09 percent.
With the mining commodity prices becoming low, the agricultural sector has now become the main engine of growth, which is ahead of the construction sector and the trade sector.
"I want (all sides) to use this momentum to rearrange the key sectors in North Kalimantan to make them the engines of quality economic growth in the future, which will eventually have a good impact on the local peoples welfare," he affirmed.(*)
