Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Maritime and Fisheries Ministry has detained 13 Vietnamese-flagged fishing boats and 94 Vietnamese crew members for allegedly conducting illegal poaching activities in Indonesian waters.

"The ministrys patrol ship Hiu Macan 01 has detained 13 Vietnamese-flagged ships for alleged illegal fishing in Indonesias exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea," Director General of Fisheries and Maritime Resource Monitoring Eko Djalmo Asmadi noted in a statement here, Friday.

The ships detained on March 21 have been identified as BV 92553 TS, BV 92552 TS, BV 5273 TS, BV5271 TS, BV 5525 TS, BV 0480 TS, BV 94437 TS, BV 92886 TS, BV55028 TS, BV 92709 TS, BV 92696 TS, BV 92206 TS, and BV90951 TS.

Asmadi stated that the ships were detained after the Hiu Macan 01 patrol ship detected the foreign boats operating in Indonesias EEZ in the South China Sea at around 7:53 a.m. local time, Tuesday (March 23).

The patrol ship had managed to intercept the foreign fishing boats and had escorted them to the Pontianak Marine Resources and Fisheries (PSDKP) station in West Kalimantan for further investigation.

The 13 Vietnamese boats arrived at the Pontianak PSDKP station on Wednesday morning.
