Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The agreement signed with the Indonesian Police to increase security measures at the parliament complex is not aimed at restricting interaction between legislators and the public, Speaker of the House of Representatives Bambang Soesatyo stated.

"The agreement aims to increase security at the parliament complex without reducing or restricting interaction between legislators and the public," Bambang noted here on Thursday.

The House speaker remarked that the agreement aimed at improving the security system at the complex and taking precautionary measures against likely disturbances and security threats against workers in the parliament complex, legislators, and all visitors to the complex.

"The House of Representatives is a vital state institution that will need a better security system," he affirmed, adding that it should have a good management system in place to handle any situation.

In addition, it should establish coordination with the Indonesian Police and military to maintain security and order in the parliament.

"The House leaders have urged the legislation and expertise agencies as well as the secretariat general to follow up on the memorandum of understanding," he stated.

Earlier on Wednesday, the parliament had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indonesian Police to increase security in the parliament complex and take precautionary measures against likely disturbances without posing a hindrance to the public.

"This is aimed at increasing security. We have discussed this since a long time, as several suicide bombing incidents have occurred recently," Bambang pointed out.

Under the agreement, the parliament police will be deployed to ensure security in the complex.
