Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Online taxi safety standards are viewed as being weak due to rampant crimes by drivers of such services as was experienced by 29-year-old Yun Siska Rohani.

"Several cases of crimes related to online taxi users have come to light. However, the handling or solving of security problems or legal protection for online taxi users was almost non-existent until now," analyst of Transportation Policy and Chairman of the Jakarta People Forum Azas Tigor Nainggolan stated here on Friday.

Nainggolan revealed that Rohani, 29, was murdered on March 18, 2018, by an online taxi driver and his friend when she had taken a ride to Bogor.

A case was reported on October 11, 2017, in which a woman was almost raped by a driver in Makassar, while another woman was robbed by a driver in Bandung on January 17, 2018, and in another incident on February 12, 2018, a woman was abused and left by her driver around the Soekarno Hatta Airport area.

Nainggolan urged the government to implement the overall online taxi rules in line with Ministerial Regulation No. 108 of 2017 on Implementation of Transportation for People With No Public Vehicles Without Fixed Routes, so that customers can be protected.

"We can say that all crimes by online taxi drivers prove that there is no Minimum Service Standard for online taxi service offered to passengers. It also demonstrates that proper standards are not maintained in the recruitment of drivers by online taxi applicators," he noted.

He remarked that the European Court of Justice had ruled that the services of Uber as well as other online transportation service providers and operators, such as licensing stickers, were monitored.

"Indonesia still needs time to oversee the monitoring of both conventional and online taxi services due to the lack of rules and the government`s supervision," he explained.

Furthermore, Nainggolan expressed hope that the government would be more firm in the implementation of rules for online taxi services.
