Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Industry Minister, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that Indonesia`s automotive industry is growing rapidly, with a very significant contribution to the national economy.

"This can be seen from the production figures of four-wheeled vehicles, which has increased to 1.216 million units in 2017 compared to two years earlier, which only reached 1.177 million units," he noted here on Thursday.

Hartarto conveyed this while giving a speech at the opening of the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2018 at Jakarta International Expo, Kemayoran, Jakarta.

According to Hartarto, the rapid growth of the automotive industry is also reinforced by an increase of 231 thousand units of Completely Built Up (CBU) vehicles in 2017, where there were only 194 thousand units in 2016.

Meanwhile, the export of automotive components increased 13 times from 6.2 million components in 2016 to 81 million components in 2017.

"This sector also provides employment opportunities to more than 1.5 million people, distributed in various jobs ranging from the assembly industry, first, second, and third-tier components to the workforce at the official workshop," he remarked.

Through the effective government regulation, the addition of new investment and expansion, and the adoption of the latest technology, is expected to create a conducive business.

"I hope the target production of 1.5 million units would be achieved in 2020," he added.
