Pasuruan, E Java (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) launched "Pesantrenpreneur" and "Ummart," which are "pesantren" (Islamic boarding school-based entepreneurship program) and modern retail shop here on Saturday.

"I highly appreciate the Indonesian Young Entepreneurs Association (HIPMI) chapter of East Java, in particular, with regard to the Ummart and pesantrenpreneur program to improve economy from our young enterpreneurs," he stated at the Bayt Al-Hikmah boarding school.

The ceremony was attended by First Lady Iriana and a number of ministers as well as East Java Governor Soekarwo.

"We have to support ideas such as this and provide motivation, so that the number will not only reach 10 but will be available across all pesantrens, reaching almost 30 thousand, he remarked.

HIPMI East Java general chairman Mufti Anam revealed that "Ummart" was initially set up as a pilot project of Bayt Al-Hikmah, but it would later be developed in 10 other pesantrens, with assistance from other modern retail outlets.

He explained that there are at present 30 thousand pesantrens across the countries, which would benefit about five million students and 10 million people.

"I have seen that several pesantrens have "Ummart" or "Nummart." Therefore, we will continue to develop them. The government has also started to set up micro-wakaf banks, which would start at 20 pesantrens, and then increase to 40. Later, more and more would be established. That is what I hope," the president revealed.

Mufti pointed out that one thousand Ummart have been established across the province.
