"Proud of you Zohri," Minister Retno Marsudi tweeted on Thursday.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian sprinter Lalu Muhammad Zohri won a gold medal in the 100-meter men`s sprint in the U-20 World Athletic Championship in Finland on Wednesday.
According to a press release from the national athletics association PB PASI on Thursday, Zohri finished the race in 10.18 seconds.
Zohri, whose hometown is Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Province, beat two athletes from the United States -- Anthony Schwartz and Eric Harrison -- who finished in second and third place respectively at 10.22 seconds.
Zohri`s Finland result also broke his own junior national record of 10.25 seconds and is close to a national record set by Suryo Agung Wibowo at 10.17 seconds.
"I am so proud of what I achieved today. This is so amazing for me," Zohri noted in a statement.
For Zohri, the Finland athletic championship offers a momentum and ground for preparation prior to his participation in the 2018 Asian Games to be held in Jakarta and Palembang next month.
Officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports congratulated Zohri for his achievement.
"Zohri has made his country proud, and he has a remarkable potential," Deputy II Of Youth Development, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Asrorun Niam Sholeh remarked in a statement.
Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi also felicitated Zohri for winning a gold medal in the championship.
"Proud of you Zohri," Marsudi tweeted on Thursday.
