June Hsin Lee, a Korean athlete, noted in Jakarta on Thursday that he had visited Ragunan Zoo to obtain information on the collection of animals.
"I want to see the zoo in Jakarta first-hand and up close and to witness its collection of fauna," Lee stated.
Lee said he had utilized the opportunity to have a picnic at the zoo since after completing his competition in the Asian Games, he still had time to make a visit before returning to his country.
"Before I go home, I took the time to go on a trip, one of them being to Ragunan Zoo. This is because in a tourist guide book, this location seems to be one of the favorites to visit," he remarked.
The same view was also echoed by Young Liung, who claimed that a visit to the Ragunan tourist attraction during to a visit to Indonesia for participating in the four-year sporting event of Asian countries will forever remain etched in his memory.
"There is a vast collection at this zoo. Many animals are also bred in an effort to preserve the environment," he stated.
He noted that tourists or Asian Games participants, who are still in Indonesia, are recommended to visit Ragunan Zoo.
"I recommend that sports participants, who have finished competing, should make trips to Ragunan Zoo because the collection is quite huge that can increase knowledge and create memories while visiting Jakarta," he emphasized.
Ragunan Zoo, spread across an area of 140 hectares, has 295 species and 4,040 specimens.
Ragunan Zoo is the first in Indonesia that was founded in 1864 with the name "Planten En Dierentuin," which means "Plants and Zoos." During that time, "Planten En Dierentuin" was managed by Batavia`s Flora and Fauna Compassion Association, which was incorporated in "Culturule Vereniging Planten en Dierentuin at Batavia."
In 1949, the name "Planten En Dierentuin" was changed to Cikini Zoo, and in 1969, it was moved to the Ragunan area, Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, in 1964.
