"We use the term `festival` so that people will see human rights as a friendly initiative," chairman of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), Ahmad Taufik Damanik, said in a press briefing here on Wednesday.
Five institutions, namely Komnas HAM, the Office of Presidential Staff (KSP), Central Java administration, Wonosobo district administration, and the International Forum for Indonesian Development (INFID), have signed a memorandum of understanding on the implementation of the festival.
The festival to be held from Nov 13 to 15 would become part of human rights cities conference initiated by INFID and Komnas HAM.
Damanik stated that the festival is expected to improve public knowledge on human rights and implement it in their daily lives.
"The Human Rights Festival is part of the joint commitment among the Komnas HAM, government leaders, NGO, and the public to make human rights as the basic values in the state and scoiety," he remarked.
The festival would promote human rights and tolerance in districts and municipalities in Central Java and document its implementation in some regions.
According to Komnas HAM, the theme of the festival is based on the latest political and social conditions in Indonesia, which states that intolerance would erode the spirit of "unity in diversity" and people`s solidarity.
Protection and respect to minority groups and disabled persons should be increased to create an equitable and inclusive Indonesia, he added.
