Jakarta, Nov 9 (ANTARA News) - The US Ambassador to Indonesia, Joseph R. Donovan, visited Natuna, Riau Islands Province, to explore the potential of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of economy, education and fisheries.

Donovan`s visit from November 6 to 8, 2018, was the first visit by the US ambassador to Natuna in the last 20 years.

"The purpose of my visit is to explore ways to enhance relations between the US and Natuna in the context of the strategic partnership we have with Indonesia," Ambassador Donovan said shortly after landing at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport here Friday.

During the visit, Ambassador Donovan met with the Head of Natuna District, Abdul Hamid Rizal; Maritime and Fisheries Affairs Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, as well as high school students in East Bunguran Sub-district.

With Minister Susi, Ambassador Donovan discussed the fisheries on Natuna Island and plans to improve the lives of local fishermen.

"We also discussed efforts made by the minister in reducing illegal fishing, where she is very successful in arresting illegal foreign fishing vessels in Indonesian waters," Donovan said.

To follow up on the cooperation, especially in the economic field, Ambassador Donovan met with a number of businesses on Natuna Island to explore opportunities for cooperation with US companies in various fields, including fisheries, tourism and logistics.

During his three-day visit to Natuna, Ambassador Donovan visited the Indonesian Naval and Air Force Base.

Donovan also met East Bunguran High School students to discuss environmental issues and marine conservation, and motivate them to continue their studies in the US.

"I believe this visit is a good example of the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific where companies of both countries can succeed, local people can make progress, and bilateral partnerships can grow," Ambassador Donovan said.
