The chairman of the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) said conservation of life below water and reasonable life and economic growth are parts of the world`s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.
Therefore, the government policy in the maritime and fisheries sector must not be focused on a single target by neglecting other interests which are also part of SDGs, Bambang said.
"In practice sustainable fishery, one target such as protection of life below water, must not sacrifice the economy. We could trade off like that but we must maintain the balance," he said here on Wednesday.
Bambang was speaking at a discussion session titled "Kadin`s Contribution of View for Mid Term Development Plan 2020-2024 to promote Maritime and Fishery Industry held at Bappenas.
He said sea ecosystem conservation without considering economic aspect is feared to cause poverty especially among the people in coastal area.
He said the industry in the fishery sector would be in difficulty to secure the basic material if attention is focused only ecosystem protection, adding the fish processing industry would have to rely on import for basic material.
"We must ensure that our processing industry should be based on our resources. For that in seeing the situation we must not adopt myopic approach . All aspects must support each other," he said.
The discussion, held by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) in cooperation with Bappenas, was attended by business players in the maritime and fishery sector, government officials, academicians.
The results of discussion are expected to contribute to the process of drafting the national mid term development plan 2020-2024.
