The meeting was held at the Headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Geneva, Switzerland, from Nov 19 to 23, 2018, and was attended by 191 delegations from WIPO member countries and the Director General of WIPO, according to a statement from Foreign Affairs Ministry here on Thursday.
"Intellectual Property is one of the main keys to the success of social, economy, and cultural development. In this case, through CDIP, all WIPO member countries and stakeholders are expected to continue providing input and seeking solutions for various challenges related to intellectual property and development," Kleib said in his welcome speech as Chairperson of the Session.
Under Indonesia`s leadership, CDIP managed to resolve various agendas which were stalled since a long time, including the agreement to hold the International Conference related to Intellectual Property (IP) and Development, which could not be agreed upon since 2015.
Kleib was recognized as having recorded a WIPO history, where, for the first time, all points of the meeting agenda were successfully agreed upon without leaving issues pending.
The success of the Indonesian leadership at CDIP was directly recognized by the WIPO Director General, Francis Gury, as well as all member countries, both from developing and developed countries.
This fact, of course, strengthens the image of Indonesia as a country that is able to bridge the interests of developing and developed countries at international fora.
In this session, CDIP unanimously accepted Indonesia`s proposal to add a new topic of discussion entitled "IP and Creative Economy."
This proposal was submitted by Indonesia as a follow-up to the success of the World Conference on Creative Economy, in Bali, from Nov 6 to 8, 2018, and emphasized the importance of WIPO`s role in discussing the position of Intellectual Property in the development of creative economy.
This is a significant diplomatic achievement, where Indonesia succeeded in bringing the national agenda to the international agenda.
Indonesia`s leadership at CDIP for the period of 2018-2019 is focused on continuing to support one of the priority programs of the Indonesian government to encourage the Indonesian economy, which is based on innovation, knowledge, and creativity.
CDIP is the only international forum that specifically discussed the relevance of Intellectual Property issues and development.
The implementation of the development agenda through IP is aimed at creating an international IP regime that is balanced in encouraging innovation and creativity, both for developed and developing countries.
Besides holding the role of CDIP Chair, currently Indonesia also holds the position of Deputy Chair of negotiations on protection text of Genetic Resources, Traditional Wisdom, and Expressions of Traditional Culture at the WIPO IGC-GRTKF Committee and also coordinator of Like Minded Group of Countries (LMGs) at the said committee.
Since 2017, Indonesia is also the coordinator of Asia Pacific and Middle Eastern countries in all committees at WIPO.
