Governor`s Special Staff for Climate Change Najib Asmani noted in Palembang on Monday that South Sumatra had implemented a landscape or environmental restoration program that was assisted by donor countries.
Donor countries, including Norway and Britain, are helping the landscape program, as they care about environmental improvement programs, he revealed.
He remarked that the program was aimed at creating a green economy, as its management included the surrounding community by not harming the environment.
He explained that this is since landscape management also encompasses village development in the fields of plantations, fisheries, and other aspects of green economy.
He further stated that an important landscape program was implemented, as it was also aimed at preventing the occurrence of forest and land fires.
Moreover, South Sumatra`s forest and other important protected areas are quite extensive, and if they are not managed optimally, forest and land fires can arise during the dry season, he cautioned.
The landscape program was, in fact, initiated since the forest and land fires occurred in 2015 that caused a thick haze.
He pointed out that the smoke had drifted to the country, so it had drawn the attention of the global community.
Director of the Management Program of Sendang Damayanti Buchori had earlier stated that the landscape program was focused on preserving the environment, so that it remained green.
Moreover, the landscape program aimed at improving the economy of the community without damaging the environment, he added.
