A three-minute campaign video, containing the message of migration benefit using safe networks and ASEAN`s efforts to protect migrant workers` rights, was screened at the ASEAN Secretariat here on Wednesday.
The launch of the safe migration campaign video was also aimed at commemorating the International Migration Day, which falls on Dec 18.
"The migration of workers is an important factor supporting economic and social development in the region," ASEAN Deputy Secretary General for Social and Cultural Community, Kung Phoak, said during the launch of the campaign.
The campaign is the real implementation of ASEAN consensus on the protection and promotion of migrant workers` rights signed by all ASEAN leaders during their 31st Summit held in Manila.
The number of migrant workers in Southeast Asia continues to increase, and an estimated 21.3 million of ASEAN population stay outside their countries. Of the total, 6.8 million are workers who migrated to the region.
A great number of migrant workers employed in the domestic sector are vulnerable to face cases and are in dire need of protection.
"In reality, many workers choose to migrate unsafely due to a lack of information and knowledge," Phoak noted.
Hence, commitment at a regional level is considered very important to protect ASEAN migrant workers and promote their rights.
