The medical personnel that help IDI to treat the tsunami victims came from the Indonesian Internal Medical Association, Indonesian Orthopedic Surgeons Association, and Indonesian Emergency Medical Association.
Banten IDI Chairman Dr. Hendrarto Sp ENT remarked here on Sunday that besides handling the victims quickly, IDI also set up five command posts of community health services in the tsunami-affected areas of Carita, Labuan, Panimbang, Cibaliung, and Sumur for emergency response medical treatment.
In the meantime, IDI field coordinator Dr. Atep Supriadi SpEm, said the handling of surgery and treatment for advanced victims was handled by five general hospitals in Banten.
"At present the medical team is conducting orthopedic surgery (bone surgery) and neurosurgery for the victims," he said.
Evacuation of the bodies of disaster victims in the affected areas is being and continues to be carried out by disaster volunteers with the TNI and Polri.
The current number of victims is still increasing: around 170 people have died, around 800 have been injured and around 30 are still missing.
For the injured victims, some have returned home, and some others are still being treated at local medical posts and hospitals.
