Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA News)- An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter Scale jolted Aceh Singkil, Aceh Province, on Saturday at 11:36 p.m. local time, but it did not have potential to trigger a tsunami.

The quake`s epicenter was located at 2.04 degree northern latitude and 97.86 degree eastern longitude, 35 km southwest of Aceh Singkil District, and at a depth of 10 km below sea level, Edison Kurniawan, head of the Medan meteorology, climatology and geophysics office, said on Sunday.

The tremor was a shallow crustal earthquake caused by subduction activity of Indo-Australia plate toward Eurasia plate, he explained.

The earthquake was felt by residents of Aceh Singkil and Gunung Sitoli on Nias Island in North Sumatra Province at II-III MMI (modified mercalli intensity).
