Medan, N Sumatra, (ANTARA News) - Social Affairs Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita distributed some one thousand packages of basic necessities among low-income people from various sub-districts in Medan, capital of North Sumatra, on Thursday.

The minister distributed the packages among the needy at Benteng Square in the presence of some local officials, including North Sumatra Vice Governor Musa Rajeksha and Medan Mayor Dzulmi Eldin.

Kartasasmita stated that the packages were part of the social assistance program believed to be able to alleviate the financial burden of the public, particularly food needs.

The Social Affairs Ministry has a lot of programs to assist low-income people, and it needs cooperation from all sides to realize the programs properly, he noted.

"We need to cooperate with regional governments to benefit from the programs at the Social Affairs Ministry. This time, we distributed one thousand packages of basic necessities. Insya Allah (God willing), we will help them again in the future based on a proposal from city government," he revealed.

He added that through the event, all sides, including the Social Affairs Ministry, regional governments, and the public, would hopefully strengthen social solidarity and would highlight the effort of the state in handling social problems.
