Hartarto won the award for his work in laying down a strategic foundation to bring the Indonesian nation into the industrial era 4.0.
"We thank you because with the blessing and grace of Allah SWT, I received this award," Hartarto noted after receiving the award at Graha Sabha Pramana UGM Yogyakarta through his statement received in Jakarta on Saturday.
Hartarto claimed to feel proud and touched on receiving the Herman Johannes Award.
As a UGM alumnus, Hartarto admitted to have never imagined that within three decades, he would return to UGM in an official senate meeting.
"Hence, I laud and thank UGM. As an alumnus, I am proud and happy to return to UGM, with many physical changes that have occurred on this campus over the past few years," he said.
The 2019 Herman Johannes Award was bestowed on Hartarto directly by Gadjah Mada University Chancellor Panut Mulyono in commemoration of the 73rd Technical Higher Education Day.
In 2003, Herman Johannes` name was enshrined by Katgama as an award for the main work of science and technology research.
Herman Johannes was an Indonesian scholar, politician, scientist, and hero in 1966.
Airlangga expressed hope that the Herman Johannes Award he received would be a driving force to continue working for the nation, especially in the field of industry.
He noted that currently, Indonesia is ready to enter the industrial era 4.0, marked by the launch of Making Indonesia 4.0, a roadmap that contains the strategy and clear direction in an effort to revitalize the manufacturing sector.
In addition to Airlangga, the other recipients of the 2019 Herman Johannes Award were Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi in the field of international diplomacy, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi for the transportation sector, and the late Sedijatmo Atmohoedojo in the field of construction.
