Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Some 1,500 people have taken refuge due to a flash flood triggered by heavy rain in Jayapura District, Papua Province, on Saturday night

The evacuees came from several flood-hit areas, spokesman for the Papua Provincial Police Senior Commissioner Ramon A said during a press briefing at Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Jayapura on Sunday.

"Some 15 families are being sheltered in BTN Bintang Timur housing complex and 20 families in BTN Gajah Mada housing complex.. while the number of evacuees sheltered in Doyo is 200, in Kemiri is 200, at nursing home is 23, in HIS complex is 300 and in SIL is 400," he said.

The flash flood hit hardest Dobonsolo and Hinekombe.villages."Several housing complexes were damaged and many victims were found there," he said.

The flash flood destroyed 350 houses, three brigdes, eight drainage systems and four sections of roads.

"In addition, one market, two churches, one mosque and 104 house-cum- shops are also damaged heavily," he said.

The flood also claimed the lives of 61 people and injured 43 others.
