Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian mixed doubles pair Tontowi Ahmad/Winny Oktavina Kandow beat Hafiz Faisal/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja with a score of 19-21, 21-18 and 21-19 to advance into the 2019 Malaysia Open quarter-finals. For Tontowi/Winny, the victory over Hafiz/Gloria at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Thursday, was the first one after two encounters in previous matches. The second meeting took place during the 2019 India Open tournament.

"We have studied their playing patterns. At the 2019 Indian Open yesterday, they beat us. We watched the match video again to look for weaknesses," Tontowi said in an official statement reported by the Indonesian Badminton
Association (PBSI).

According to Tontowi, who is better known as Owi, the main reason why they won this level 750 match was because they were calm. Although they lagged behind Hafiz/Gloria, he said he remained calm all through the match, right to the end.

"The key to any victory is being calm on the field, and not playing in a hurry. Even though we were behind, we remained calm and continued to collect points one by one, "Owi added.

In the quarter-finals, Tontowi/Winny will face Malaysian partners Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing. The two pairs have never played against each other before.

"Before the quarter-finals, we must get enough rest and maintain a diet. Later, we will study our opponents' game. The important thing is to play a focused and calm game. Hopefully, I can win," said Owi.

The 2019 Malaysia Open tournament is taking place from 2 to 7 April 2019. The total prize money for the super 750 level badminton tournament is 700,000 US dollars (US).
