Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) watched three badminton matches at the Cenderawasih Sports Center, Jayapura City, before closing the XVI Papua National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) at Mandala Stadium on Saturday night (Eastern Indonesia Standard Time).

Spectators warmly welcomed the President as he entered the sports center along with Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali, head of the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NPC), Senny Marbun, and other officials.

Jokowi seemed enthusiastic about watching the best para-badminton players competing against each other in the final matches of the XVI Papua Peparnas.

Every now and then, he broke into applause when the players hit smashes.

In addition, he occasionally chatted with Minister Amali and the NPC head.

The President first watched the men's singles SU5 match between Dheva Anrimusti (West Java) and Suryo Nugroho (Central Java). Anrimusti, who won silver in the same category at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, won the match with a score of 21-17, 21-14.

Meanwhile, in the second match, Subhan (Central Java) and Dimas Tri Aji (West Java) battled for the men's singles SU6 title.

The Central Java player snatched the gold medal after defeating his opponent with a score of 21-12, 21-15.

The last match was contested by Wiwin Andri (Jakarta) and Supriadi (Central Java). Andri won the match with a score of 21-19, 21-13.

This year, Peparnas, the four-yearly national sporting event for people with disabilities, saw participation from 3,609 athletes from all provinces of Indonesia, except West Sulawesi.

Twelve sports were contested at Peparnas, which was hosted by Jayapura City and Jayapura District: powerlifting, athletics, boccia, badminton, chess, judo, shooting, archery, swimming, cerebral palsy soccer, wheelchair tennis, and table tennis.
