Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) welcomed the commemoration of Kartini Day on Sunday by urging all Indonesian women to preserve and enliven the spirit Raden Ajeng Kartini's struggle.

"Let us keep enlivening Kartini's spirit of struggle," he tweeted in his official Twitter account to commemorate this Indonesian heroine's day, which falls on every April 21.

Kartini's spirit of struggle that needs to be enlivened by all Indonesian women is the one that is dedicated to empowering family, community, nation, and future generation, the incumbent president said.

Born in Jepara, Central Java, on April 21, 1879, Raden Ajeng Kartini is Indonesia's national heroine. She passed away at the age of 25.

However, so many Indonesian women have been inspired by her thoughts and ideas on the role of education and women's rights that have been published in a book entitled "Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang" (From Darkness Comes Light).
