Palangka Raya Police in Central Kalimantan, is currently investigating the deaths of two students from the University of Palangka Raya (UPR) after being rammed by a car belonging to a local police officer.
The accident supposedly caused by member of the police is yet being investigated at the local police station to uncover precisely how it took place, Police Chief of the Palangka Raya Police Commissioner Timbul R. Siregar noted on Tuesday.
"The accident that took place on Jalan Yos Sudarso is yet under investigation," Siregar stated in Palangka Raya.
The two-star rank officer further added that his side had conducted an investigation at the crime scene to unearth the cause behind the accident.
"Along with conducting the crime scene investigation, we also inquired from four eyewitnesses suspected of knowing about the incident," Siregar revealed.
The accident took place on Sunday night of (Apr 21) at around 11 p.m. West Indonesia Time in the Jalan Yos Sudarso area that led to the deaths of Syahril Malau, 22, a resident of Jalan Pangeran Samuda I, and Riston Pangaribuan, 21, a resident of Jalan B. Koetin Palangka Raya.
Fellow survivor Yogi Sidabutarbutar, 22, residing in the Jalan Yos Sudarso area, recalled that along with two of his friends who lost their lives, two other colleagues had suffered grave injuries and had to be treated at the Public Hospital Dr. Doris Sylvanus and Siloam Hospital in Palangka Raya.
"My colleague Apriani Ningsih Simarmata, 21, a resident of Mes Putra Jalan Bukit Keminting, is undergoing treatment at the Siloam Hospital, while Lamtio Simatupang, 21, living on Jalan Yos Sudarso III, also my girlfriend, is yet being treated at RSUD Dr. Doris Sylvanus Palangka Raya," Sidabutarbutar remarked.
Sidabutarbutar, a UPR student in the eighth semester, recalled the initial chronology of events leading to the accident, with him and his girlfriend as well as three colleagues engaged in conversation in the Jalan Yos Sudarso area on Sunday (Apr 21), at around 11 p.m. WIB, near the Indomaret supermarket.
During that time, a black open-top car drove up at high speed from Jalan Yos Sudarso toward the big roundabout in the middle of the road. The speeding vehicle suddenly veered to the left of the road and rammed into the five students standing on the roadside at around 11:30 p.m. WIB.
Yogi, who spotted the car heading towards him, was quick to respond and moved away, though four of his colleagues at that time had no time to keep out of harm's way and were hit.
"After the car rammed into them, I saw my friends lying down, and the driver emerging in police uniform. I, along with several local residents, took our injured colleagues to the hospital for help," he added.
