"We realize Prime Minister Theresa May's decision (to step down) during this difficult time," spokesman for the Indonesian Foreign Ministry Arrmanatha Nasir said in a short message text here on Friday.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Theresa May, strategic cooperation between Indonesia and Britain has increasingly become closer. Moreover, the two nations celebrate their 70 years of diplomatic relations this year, Nasir said.
"Indonesia is ready to have close relations with the next British prime minister to step up strategic cooperation between the two countries in the fields of economy, education, environment, maritime affairs, creative economy and cultural exchange," he said.
Theresa May announced his resignation as leader of the Conservative Party at 10 Downing Street, Britain, on Friday.
The 62-year old woman will officially resign from the Conservative Party on June 7, 2019 and will continue to serve as prime minister until her successor is elected.
In the emotional statement, May stated that serving as prime minister is an honor for her and she was very grateful for having a chance to serve the country she loves very much.
