Jakarta (ANTARA) -
City-owned transportation company PT LRT Jakarta has worked to guarantee transportation services for persons with disabilities, both in stations and on trains.

The company invited persons with disabilities to meetings in March, before the LRT was ready for a public trial run starting Tuesday (June 11).

"We also conducted training (for our staffs) on how to serve persons with disabilities, and discussed what facilities must be improved," LRT Jakarta's managing director, Allan Tandiono, said at Velodrome Station here on Tuesday.

Facilities for persons with disabilities include an elevator that can accommodate wheelchair users, pregnant women and the elderly, who need to reach platforms located on the upper floors of stations.

There are also yellow textured lines or 'guiding blocks' to indicate the direction to reaching the train for persons with disabilities.

In addition, there are wide entrances and exits that are prioritized for wheelchair users or families carrying strollers.

On the train's arrival and departure routes, there is a special toilet for wheelchair users. The distance between the floor of the track and the train had been prepared for wheelchair users to ease their entering trains.

"The improvement was from the feedback we received. The distance should not exceed the small wheel in the wheelchair to support the passengers' safety. The elevation is also not too high, otherwise it will be difficult to push the chair," Tandiono said.

Inside the train, there is a special area without seats reserved for wheelchair users and baby strollers. If the area is not in use, it can become a storage area for large items, such as luggage.

Doors that are located near the area are also equipped with special signs, so the door can be prioritized for wheelchair users who want to get onto the train.
