Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) - National Development Planning Minister/Head of National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Bambang P.S. Brodjonegoro said the central government has targeted that the Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, would have been developed to be an international airport but its construction still awaited the winner of the tender process.

"We are launching a tender for cooperation between the government and business entities for the development of Komodo-Labuan Bajo Airport. We will see who wins," he said during a meeting with West Manggarai District Head Agustinus Ch. Dula and representatives of the Forkopimda (Regional Leadership Communication Forum) here on Saturday.

In essence, the central government had targeted to develop Komodo airport into a large, international-standard airport, he said, adding that the Labuan Bajo was a priority tourism destination that was estimated to draw tourists from across the world.

Furthermore, the West Manggarai marine tourism destination, with Komodo as the main icon, has been recognized worldwide.

"The central government has an initiative to develop Komodo Airport based on our hopes to boost tourism, one of them being through development in Labuan Bajo," he expounded.

In the meantime, the West Manggarai district head expressed gratitude for the central government's focus on the construction of various infrastructure to support the tourism sector in West Manggarai.

"The development of Komodo International Airport has been planned since long, but owing to obstacles being faced so far, it had yet to be started. We thank the central government for its constant attention on us," he emphasized.

He explained that various infrastructure built will positively affect the tourism sector in West Manggarai in future.
