Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - The Aceh Narcotic Office (BNN Aceh) has foiled attempts to smuggle 2.47 tons of crystal methamphetamine into the province since 2017.

The methamphetamine originated from Malaysia and was brought into Aceh through the eastern coastal areas, Brigadier General Faisal Abdul Naser, head of BNN Aceh, stated here on Thursday.

"The success in thwarting the attempts to smuggle the contraband was owing to the cooperation among the National Narcotic Agency (BNN), BNN Aceh, police, and other related elements," Naser noted.

Of the 2.47 tons, 600 kilograms were seized over the past six months, or during the January-June 2019 period.

The smugglers moved the drugs to wooden boats in the middle of the sea and carried them to Aceh from where they were later distributed to other regions, including Java Island.

The BNN has forged cooperation with the Malaysian Police to put an end to the smuggling of drugs into Indonesia since 2018.

Following a tip-off received from the Malaysian Police, attempts to smuggle some 500 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine into Indonesia were thwarted.
