Jakarta (ANTARA) -
The House of Representatives (DPR) passed a science and technology national system bill into law at its plenary session here on Tuesday.

All lawmakers present at the session approved the bill, as the DPR passed it into law.

The chief of the special committee for the bill, Daryatmo Mardianto, said the bill called for the immediate implementation of science-and technology-based development throughout the country.

If the development is based on science and technology, the research, development, assessment and application of science and technology will not merely be a recommendation in continuing national development policy, he said.

"Science and technology in the bill is aimed at ensuring that the implementation of development policy could be accounted for, in terms of moral, ethics and science by referring to the state ideology Pancasila," he said.

The bill also issued a mandate to the government to set up a national research and innovation body to integrate research, development, assessment, application, invention and innovation, he said.

With regard to the science and technology fund, the committee called for the allocation of Rp990 billion in endowment funds for research, in accordance with the agreement between the government and the DPR in the 2019 state budget.
