Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - Six Javanese porcupines (Hystrix javanica) belonging to Bali Zoo in Gianyar District were released into the Lake Buyan-Lake Tamblingan Natural Park in Buleleng District, Bali.

During a series of events to commemorate Nature Conservation National Day on Sunday (July 28), a male and five female porcupines, aged between one and two years and weighing between five and six kilograms, were released into the Lake Buyan-Lake Tamblingan Natural Park in collaboration with Bali's Natural Resource Conservation Center.

"We hope that the released porcupine would breed well," Bali Zoo's spokesperson, Emma Kristina Chandra, remarked here, Monday.

She stated that as a conservation institution, Bali Zoo had succeeded in breeding dozens of animals, including the Javanese porcupine, and would release some animals into their natural habitat.

The release of the Javanese porcupines into Lake Buyan-Lake Tamblingan Natural Park on Sunday was the second of its kind to be conducted by Bali Zoo.

Chandra stated that Bali Zoo had released 10 Javanese porcupines comprising seven males and three females on April 14, 2016, in the area of Besi Kalung Temple, Penebel, in Tabanan District.

She noted that Bali Zoo still had 15 Javanese porcupines whom they would breed.

In addition to releasing Javanese porcupines, the Bali Zoo also released a male Javanese gibbon named Boris into the Situ Patengan Nature Reserve in West Java Province on July 25, 2019. Related news: Bali Zoo hosts sumatran tigers
